A breakdown in a car park is an inconvenience. A breakdown on the Bruce Highway or the Sunshine Motorway is a different situation altogether, higher speeds, less room to move, and drivers coming up behind you a lot faster than they would on a suburban street.
Most advice about roadside breakdowns treats every location the same: pull over, hazards on, wait. That’s fine for a driveway. It’s not enough for a highway.
Here’s what actually changes when the job is a highway recovery, and what we do differently to handle it safely.
Why Highway Breakdowns Carry More Risk
It comes down to speed differential and space. A car sitting stationary on a 100km/h stretch of highway, even fully on the shoulder, is a hazard to everyone travelling at speed toward it, especially around blind curves, on-ramps, or narrow sections where the shoulder disappears altogether. Stretches between Coolum Beach and Noosa Heads, or the tighter sections through the hinterland approaches, are good examples of where there’s often less room to work with than drivers expect.
This is also why highway jobs get treated differently the moment you call. It’s not just “another tow”, it’s a traffic management problem first, and a vehicle recovery problem second.

What Matters Most When You Call
For a standard breakdown, we need your general location and vehicle details. For a highway breakdown, a few extra details make a real difference to how fast and how safely the job goes:
- Direction of travel – northbound or southbound changes which side we approach from
- The nearest exit, overpass, or landmark – highway addresses don’t exist, so a marker matters more than a street name
- Which lane or shoulder you’re on – full shoulder, partial shoulder, or stuck in a live lane are three very different jobs
- Whether you’re still in the vehicle – this affects how we position the truck on arrival
Vague location details cost time on any job. On a highway, that time comes with your vehicle sitting exposed to passing traffic the whole while, so it matters more here than almost anywhere else.
What We Do Differently for a Highway Recovery
We position the truck as a barrier, not just a workspace. On a highway job, the tow truck itself is angled and lit to shield the breakdown from approaching traffic before any loading starts, the truck’s hazard lighting is doing safety work before the winch even comes out.
We load fast, and we assess afterward. In a car park, we might take a minute to talk through the vehicle’s condition before touching it. On a highway shoulder, the priority is getting the vehicle off the live carriageway safely and quickly, with a fuller assessment happening once you’re both clear of moving traffic.
We factor in the exit, not just the vehicle. Getting your car onto the tray is only half the job on a highway, getting the truck and your vehicle safely back into traffic and off at the next appropriate exit is planned before we even start loading, not worked out afterward.
Our drivers are highly qualified staff who deal with this regularly. Highway recovery isn’t the same skill as a driveway pickup, and it’s treated as its own type of job, not a variation on a standard tow.

If You’re Stuck on the Highway Right Now
A few things matter more here than a general breakdown checklist:
- Get as far left as the road allows, ideally fully onto the shoulder
- Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on if you’re not able to safely exit onto the shoulder side
- If you do need to get out, exit on the passenger side, away from traffic, and get behind the barrier if there is one
- Call for towing straight away rather than waiting to see if the issue resolves itself, every extra minute is extra exposure
If your vehicle is blocking a live lane and can’t be moved at all, that’s a situation for emergency services first, towing second, call 000 before calling us if traffic is genuinely at risk.
